1928: Mr. R. Wilson Smith Jr., son of the then Clerk of Superior Court “Bob Smith” opened a law office in the Jackson Building in downtown Gainesville, Georgia, thus founding the law firm which is now Smith, Gilliam, Williams & Miles, P.A.
1941-1946: Mr. R. Wilson Smith interrupted his practice for a 5-year tour of duty during World War II for service in the War Department in Washington D.C.
August 23, 1961:
John H. Smith – Joins his Father's Firm
John H. Smith is a United States Magistrate Judge
1974: Steven P. Gilliam Joins the Firm
1977: Jerry A. Williams Joins the Firm
Firm is moved to present location, the Historic Old Coca-Cola Building
1984: Kelly Anne Miles Joins the Firm
1989: Brad J. Patten Joins the Firm
And that makes three generations. M. Tyler Smith, son of John H. Smith and grandson of R. Wilson Smith, joins the firm.
Steven P. Gilliam negotiated the contract with the Atlanta Committee for The Olympic Games to bring the 1996 Olympics to Hall County as Vice Chair and General Counsel for Gainesville Hall “96.”

2007: Keith J. Whitaker Joins the Firm
M. Tyler Smith is a member of the State Bar of Georgia Board of Governors representing the Northeastern Circuit.
